Come and celebrate the Jubilee with us!
The Basilica of the Holy Blood has been designated as a Jubilee Church. This means that those who are unable to make the pilgrimage to Rome can also obtain the plenary indulgence closer to home, which the Roman Catholic Church will grant in the Jubilee Year 2025 primarily to pilgrims who enter the Holy Doors in the four major Basilicas of Rome.
An indulgence is the remission of “punishment” and not of “guilt”. It is therefore not the same as the forgiveness of sin. Forgiveness does not remove the consequences of sinful thoughts and actions: sins leave traces both internally and externally. According to the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, purification is therefore necessary: in this life and after death. Because God’s Son, in whom we have already been reconciled to God, also took upon himself the consequences of sin, it is possible for the Church to mediate our purified state in Christ by means of an indulgence. However, an indulgence cannot be separated from the path of conversion.
There are certain conditions attached to the Jubilee indulgence. These were determined in the “Decree On the Granting of a Plenary Indulgence during the Ordinary Jubilee Year 2025: Nunc novi Iubilaei est tempus” issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary. In general, it applies: “All the faithful who are sincerely repentant and free from any attachment to sin, who are moved by a spirit of charity and who, during the Holy Year, purified by the Sacrament of Confession and refreshed by Holy Communion, pray for the intentions of the Pope, will be able to obtain from the treasury of the Church a plenary indulgence, with remission and forgiveness of all their sins”. The Jubilee indulgence can be obtained by “making a pious pilgrimage to a jubilee site” and taking part in the liturgies and devotions determined by the Apostolic Penitentiary. The Jubilee indulgence can also be obtained “by piously visiting, individually or in groups, a jubilee site and remaining for an appropriate time in Eucharistic adoration and meditation.”
